Based out of Beijing, Hang delivers images displaying the Chinese spirit as it continues to be unleashed in this massively transitional period. Through Hang’s images, emotion and sexuality are expressed in a time where it is slowly becoming accepted to discuss and share what it so inherently human in everyone, yet has been buried deep in a culture where saving face and shame are powerful motivators to keep quiet. “Dead bodies are buried under the cherry trees! You have to believe it. Otherwise, you couldn’t possibly explain the beauty of the cherry blossoms. I was restless, lately, because I couldn’t believe in this beauty. But I have now finally understood: dead bodies are buried under the cherry trees. You have to believe it.” —Motojirō Kajii

Gillian Wearing — from Signs that say what you want them to say and not Signs that say what someone else wants you to say, 1992-3
Standing in a busy area of South London, Wearing stopped passers-by and asked them to write down what was on their mind. Among the group is one of Wearing’s best known images which depicts a smartly dressed young man with a mild, even complacent, expression holding a sign saying simply, ‘I’m desperate’. In a 1996 interview Wearing described how ‘…I think he was actually shocked by what he had written, which suggests it must have been true. Then he got a bit angry, handed back the piece of paper, and stormed off.’ [via]
